The Letter Sound Test (LeST) tests a person’s ability to sound out single letters and letter combinations.
In order to be able to sound out words, we need to know which sound a letter or letter combination corresponds to. The LeST evaluates which letter(s) a person can sound out in isolation (i.e., not in the context of a word or nonword).
The LeST is a simple reading aloud task and contains 51 graphemes (single letters and letter combinations). This test can be administered to individual students.
At the end of the test, the tester gets an overview of the grapheme a reader can sound out in isolation. The tester may then decide to train the letter-sound-correspondences for the letters that the reader could not sound out correctly.
